Also known as Survivor Day, the day was designated by the United States Congress as a day on which those affected by suicide can join together for healing and support. It was determined that Survivor Day would always fall on the Saturday before American Thanksgiving, as the holidays are often a difficult time for suicide loss survivors.
Each year, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention supports hundreds of large and small Survivor Day events around the world, in which survivors of suicide loss come together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experience. While each event is unique, all feature an AFSP-produced documentary which offers a message of growth, resilience and connection.

There are many support groups across New Hampshire for those who have lost a family member, friend or relative to suicide. Every year in the United States, more than 45, people take their own lives. Every one of these deaths leaves an estimated six or more “suicide survivors” — people who’ve lost someone they care about deeply and are left with their grief and struggle to understand why it happened. The grief process is always difficult, but a loss through suicide is like no other, and the grieving can be especially complex and traumatic.
People coping with this kind of loss often need more support than others, but may get less. There are various explanations for this. Suicide is a difficult subject to contemplate. Survivors may be reluctant to confide that the death was self-inflicted. And when others know the circumstances of the death, they may feel uncertain about how to offer help.
Grief after suicide is different, but there are many resources for survivors, and many ways you can help the bereaved. The death of a loved one is never easy to experience, whether it comes without warning or after a long struggle with illness.
