5 Life Lessons I Learned from Online Dating

A few years ago the idea that you could meet a potential love interest while staring into a computer screen must have seemed novel to some and downright bizarre to others. Today, the online dating industry generates roughly two billion dollars in revenue each year, and has become a mainstay of human social interaction. Telling someone that you met your significant other on the internet is no longer an oddity. My most valuable take-away from the entire experience has been the following five life lessons that I would like to share with you. The great thing about online dating is that it lets you approach so many potential love interests in such a short span of time. The flipside to this, however, is that you quickly learn that for every favorable response you get you have to go through about ten times as many rejections; sometimes even more. But you know what? In fact, it helped me appreciate the fact that we humans are all wonderfully different from one another and that not all of us are meant to get along. The funny thing about online dating is that sometimes it can go really well and at other times go really badly, without any apparent reasoning or logic at all. For example, one day you could be enjoying a deep and meaningful conversation with a stranger, and the very next day they could go cold on you or stop responding altogether.

I have directly sent hundreds of singles on first dates, and have introduced many more couples at my events, or just for fun.

Yet still, I am no expert, and I make mistakes in my own dating life. Since the beginning of social isolation I have been teaching webinars on how to continue to dating during social isolation.

This is going to last a lot longer than we initially expected and “waiting for this to be all over”, is just one more excuse to keep you single when you really want a partner. Currently, online dating is the main introduction point for singles. Again, I would be remiss if I didn’t throw myself into the trenches of the online dating battlefield if I were to then teach my singles to do the same. What have I discovered through my direct experience.

One of the most common topics brought up during my online dating workshops is the number of potential options people have. I hear from people who have just begun the process of online dating in search of a partner and from those who have re-entered the dating scene after years of being away or off the market. People often express their frustration with the size of their pool of eligible partners, however, the two main complaints are diametrically opposed to one another. On the one hand, people take issue with too much choice, and on the other, people lament the limited amount of matches they receive.

I want to take a moment to unpack these frustrations, as well as provide some helpful tips for anyone out there about to embark on their online dating journey. This can be potentially problematic as people may get lost in the sea of information, which can prevent them from making a well-thought-out and informed choice in who to spend their time with.
